In 2005, the Columbia Homecoming Committee brought back another old time favorite "Horseshoe Pitching".  However, this would not have been possible without the addition of horseshoe pits that were once again installed at the Columbia Township Park.  Trustee Kenneth Roth was instrumental in making sure this became a possibility.  The horseshoe pits are located behind Pavilion C in the park and can be used by all visitors.

The history of horseshoe pitching can be traced back to Roman soldiers.  During their idle hours, the soldiers occupied themselves with games that consisted of tossing metal rings over stakes pounded into the ground.  Whether these first metal rings were actually horseshoes is a matter of some debate.  It is closely related to a game call Quoits.
